Adaptive optics is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of wavefront distortions. It is used in astronomical telescopes and laser communications systems to remove atmospheric distorting.
Innovative Technology Systems (ITS), a wholly owned subsidiary of A-T Solutions, has designed a concept to improve the performance of adaptive optics by performing sodium saturation of the mesospheric layer. This will enhance the effectiveness of ground-based optical telescopes that detect and track potential military activity in space.
The methodology involves launching sounding rockets that release sodium ions to create atmospheric conditions necessary for the optimal use of ground-based optical telescopes. Adaptive optics employs a method that creates an artificial guide star by use of a laser to stimulate a sodium atomic molecular transition.
Although the technology is still in development, positive preliminary results reveal enhanced visual capabilities for ground satellites, which is essential for space situational awareness (SSA).
